About John
The son of a physician and grandson of a pharmacist, Kingstree, South Carolina, native John Poston studied biology at Wofford College and moved to Charleston in 1977 to pursue a medical degree. Before he committed to med school, however, some friends of his—taking note of his gregarious, people-person personality—suggested he look into real estate. After networking with a local agent, John’s interest was piqued. Within days of joining the Max Hill Company, Inc., as a residential sales associate in 1979, he was hooked.
John swiftly rose in the ranks at the Max Hill Company, serving as vice president of residential sales and development, general manager of five residential real estate offices in the Charleston market, and broker in charge of one. Meanwhile, he earned his MBA from the University of South Carolina.
In 1988, John amicably left to found Poston & Company, a locally owned residential and commercial real estate firm that has become a trusted fixture in the Charleston market. He has held leadership roles within various local industry organizations—including the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors, South Carolina Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce, and the Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation—and, in 1988, earned the distinction of Realtor of the Year.
Today, John is a non-competing broker focused on mentoring agents within his company—meaning any client of Poston & Co. has unlimited access to his 40-plus years of local real estate experience. John is an expert in residential and commercial brokerage, and savors the problem solving and relationship development opportunities his career affords.
When he’s not at the office, John—who splits his time between James Island and Kiawah Island—can be found whipping up meals for his wife, Kaycee, spending time with his two children and two grandsons, watching college basketball, or unwinding on the golf course.
Q&A with John
What sets Poston & Company apart from other local firms?
We do things the right way—period. If there is a question as to whether you tell your clients something or not, you tell them. If there’s a question as to whether we give up some of our commission to get a deal closed for our client, we give up some of our commission. It’s my belief that this creates a true relationship and thus the potential for repeat business.
Your favorite thing about Charleston?
There’s always something to do. From walking around downtown to studying the history, architecture, and culture to boating, the beaches, the golfing, Spoleto, the Gaillard, College of Charleston basketball games…there’s not enough time to do it all!
Favorite local restaurant?
I’m going to have to go with my man Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Did you know he’s a Kingstree native, too?
